THE HOUSE
The house has 5 bedrooms,
3 of which can be used as twin rooms giving a maximum occupancy of 8.
The house is furnished
and fitted out very simply but with everything that you will need for your
visit. Remember that there is no mains electricity or water. Washing
is by ‘bowl and jug’ in your room. The toilets are chemical and someone
in the house will have to take responsibility for emptying and cleaning.
Water (from the holy well) is excellent but should not be wasted. Filters
are provided for your drinking water.
Please
leave the house at the end of your stay as you found it
…clean and tidy.

WHAT TO TAKE
1. Bed linen or sleeping
bag:
We supply quilts
and blankets but you will need to take your own sleeping bags or sheets,
quilt covers, pillowcases and towels.
2. Food:
If you are
self catering remember that there is no shop on the Island so you will have
to take all the food you need for your stay. All food should be well packed
in strong boxes for transport to the island. There is an ‘emergency
larder’ with basic dried goods should you get stuck and tea and coffee supplies
are always available.
3. Clothes:
Weather
can be very changeable even in high summer so you will need a range of clothing
including waterproofs and boots.
4. There is
no mains electricity
so leave behind anything that needs an electric socket !
5. There is a
no smoking policy inside all the houses on Bardsey.

THE HERMITAGE
Attached to Carreg
are a group of buildings known as The Hermitage which include an Oratory,
Worship Area , Meditation Garden, Staff Accommodation and a private Hermitage
which is used either for the Island Chaplain, Retreat Leader or Religious
called to the Solitary life.
If you are visiting
as part of a Group or Private Retreatant then this area will usually be available
for your use by arrangement with the Chaplain. There will however be some
weeks for Private Retreatants, particularly in Spring and Autumn, when the
Hermitage is in use by a Solitary and will not be available. Please check
this when you book. |

GETTING TO BARDSEY
The usual ‘changeover day’ for Carreg
guests is a Saturday.. As well as this if the weather is fine there are
day trips. Our boat service for Bardsey currently leaves from Pwllheli
Marina. Even on a calm day the trip can be wet so we advise all visitors
to wrap up all cases and boxes in heavy duty black plastic sacks. In
rough weather the boat will not run and it can happen that visitors
cannot depart on the day they have booked. In this situation the Trust
will endeavour to get you to the Island at the first opportunity.
Similarly, you might not be able to leave the island when planned. All
visitors to Carreg should take account of this possibility when planning
their trip. |

ISLAND STAFF
The Island Manager will probably welcome
you to the island and then visit Carreg on the first day to give you
guidance and safety instructions. Please follow everything that he tells
you, particularly about the restricted access to ‘nesting areas’ on the
Eastern Cliffs. If you have any problem then he is there to help. The
Observatory Warden can also advise you about any aspect of Natural History.
Carreg Trust staff will either accompany
you to the island or meet you at Pwllheli Marina on the Saturday changeover
to see that you have everything you need, but they are not resident on the
island except where the retreat is organised by Carreg Trust. There is an
emergency phone on the island and if you really need to contact us then
please phone 01758 770582.
